No, is the short answer. – Weeds can’t grow through the sub-base and up to the surface on resin-bound stone. Resin-bound is made by mixing small pieces of stone with a special resin and then troweling it by hand onto a suitable base, like tarmac or resin.

Resin-bound surfaces are SUDs-compliant, which means that water drains right away. This means no more puddles, pools, or algae growth, and because there are no cracks in the surface, weeds can’t grow.

One of the best things about resin-bound flooring is how easy it is to clean, how nice it looks, and how long it lasts. It doesn’t grow weeds and doesn’t need much regular maintenance to look as good as new.

It is recommended to sweep away any debris with a stiff brush. As long as the surface is supported by a firm sub-base, weed growth can be almost completely stopped with a light jet wash once or twice a year.

Give Yourself a Suitable Sub-Surface

Instead of breaking up your old concrete or tarmac and throwing it away, homeowners can save time, money, and waste by putting resin-bound aggregates over their old driveway, patio, or parking lot surface. Before we think about putting a resin-bound driveway overlay on your current surface, we will check to see if it is stable.

If cracks can’t be cut out and fixed, resin bound overlay might not be a good idea. If the old driveway moves below the new resin, your new surface could crack or move.

Resin overlay should be the best choice for the bank because it takes less time, equipment, and materials to break up hard driveways. But if the surface isn’t built well and you try to save money on your project, you could run into problems in the future. At SJH Group, we handle the whole process and help you decide which option is best for your property.

If you need to replace your old surface, we make sure that all of our surfaces are built to the right depth and build-up, so they can meet the needs of any project.

We can lay a concrete or tarmac base for a resin-bound finish, depending on what kind of surface is already on your driveway and whether or not you want to add on to your current driveway.

Clean your Resin Bound Driveway Regularly

We recommend brushing the surface every 6 to 12 weeks with a hard-bristled (but not metal) brush and diluted household detergent.

Sometimes, especially in areas with a lot of vegetation, the wind will blow tiny seedlings on top of the surface, where they will start to grow. However, because resin-bound stone is permeable and porous, water flows right through it instead of settling, so the seedling is essentially starved of water and its roots can’t take hold.

In addition to using a weed killer (1-2 times a year), this will keep these small growths from appearing on your resin-bound stone surface and get rid of the need to do the hard work of weeding.
